Abhyanga Massage more than a simple massage
Abhyanga massage (अभ्यङ्ग) is the traditional Āyurvedic massage with warm medicinal oils.
In the Āyurvedic tradition, Abhyanga is part of the daily practices for maintaining health (Dinacharya) — not an occasional luxury, but a regular tool for balance. Unlike a conventional massage, Abhyanga works with medicinal oils selected specifically according to your constitution (Prakriti) and your current state.
The warmth of the oil, the rhythm of the massage and the plants it is made with act together on the nervous system, the tissues and the energy channels (Srotas).
What Abhyanga works on
What an Abhyanga session is like
Choosing the oil
Before the session, Narayan determines the most suitable medicinal oil according to your constitution and your current state. No generic oil is used — the one that best supports your balance at that moment is chosen.
The massage
The session lasts 60 minutes. The massage follows the classical Āyurvedic directions — rhythmic movements encouraging circulation and the penetration of the oil into the tissues.
It follows a specific sequence that combines long gliding strokes, gentle pressure and circular movements over the joints and energy points.
Throughout the session the oil is gradually absorbed into the skin, allowing the body to enter a deep state of relaxation. The calm environment and the steady rhythm help the nervous system settle and the mind to rest.
Rest
After the session, a short period of rest is recommended so that the body can integrate the effect of the oil and the techniques. If possible, avoid showering in the following hours to maximise absorption.
Who is Abhyanga for?
Abhyanga can be especially beneficial during periods of accumulated physical tension, mental fatigue, difficulty resting or a general sense of imbalance. It is also a suitable practice for those who wish to incorporate body care into a wellbeing routine inspired by Āyurveda.
If you are not sure whether Abhyanga is the right session for you, you can start with an individual Āyurvedic consultation.
How often should you receive an Abhyanga?
In the Āyurvedic tradition, Abhyanga is not a one-off treatment but a regular practice. Depending on your constitution and the season, it can be received weekly, monthly, or at the change of each season to support balance throughout the year.
Narayan will advise you on the rhythm that best suits your needs.
